Run practice drills with your family. Think beyond the basic fire drill. What does everyone do if there is a break in or power outage? Does your kid know how to handle a knock at the door from a stranger? Why not cover some basic emergencies (calling 911, response to choking, etc). Make a game out of it if appropriate (also make them spontaneous after prior practice and instructions have been given). Train the skills that the age of your kid is ready for and explain in further detail as they grow up.
Make these activities engaging for children by incorporating games and rewards, tailoring lessons to their age and maturity level. Revisit and expand on these practices as they grow. Itnshouod be for the whole family, spouse included as well as relevant extended family or neighbors.
